Frequently Asked Questions

What is osteopathy?

Osteopathy is a hands‑on approach to healthcare that focuses on improving movement, reducing pain and helping the body function at its best. Using techniques such as joint mobilisation, soft‑tissue work and stretching, osteopathy aims to address the root cause of pain rather than just the symptoms.

What conditions do you treat?

At Helix Osteopathy, we commonly treat:

  • Back and neck pain

  • Sports and exercise‑related injuries

  • Muscle tightness and joint stiffness

  • Posture‑related aches and pains

  • Shoulder, hip and knee pain

  • Sciatica and nerve‑related pain

If you’re unsure whether osteopathy is right for your issue, feel free to get in touch — we’re always happy to advise.

What happens during my first appointment?

Your first appointment will include:

  • A detailed discussion about your pain, lifestyle and goals

  • A physical assessment to understand how your body is moving

  • Hands‑on treatment tailored to your needs

  • Advice on movement, rehab or exercises where appropriate

We take the time to explain what we find and why we’re treating you in a certain way, so you feel informed and confident throughout.

Is osteopathy painful?

Osteopathy shouldn’t be painful, but you may feel some discomfort during treatment, particularly if an area is tight or inflamed. We always work within your comfort levels and adapt our approach to suit you. Many people leave feeling looser, lighter and more mobile.

Do you offer sports massage and dry needling?

Yes. Alongside osteopathy, we offer sports massage and dry needling as part of our treatment approach when appropriate. These techniques can be particularly effective for reducing muscle tension, improving recovery and supporting return to movement — especially for active individuals and sports injuries.

How many sessions will I need?

This varies depending on your condition, how long it’s been bothering you and your goals. Some people feel significant improvement after just one or two sessions, while others benefit from a short course of treatment combined with rehab or movement advice. We’ll always be clear and realistic about what you can expect.

Do I need a GP referral?

No referrals are needed — you can book directly with us. If we ever feel your symptoms would be better assessed by your GP or another healthcare professional, we’ll let you know.

What should I wear to my appointment?

Wear something comfortable that allows you to move easily, such as gym wear or loose‑fitting clothing. For some assessments or treatments, we may ask you to remove outer layers, but your comfort and consent always come first.

Where are you located?

Helix Osteopathy is based at 47a The Quadrant, Marshalswick, St Albans (AL4). We’re easily accessible for local residents, with nearby free parking available.

Do you offer evening or flexible appointments?

Yes — we aim to be as flexible as possible. If you need an early morning or out‑of‑hours appointment, get in touch and we’ll do our best to accommodate you.

How do I book an appointment?

You can book via our website by completing a registration form where we will come back to you to arrange booking. If you have any questions before booking, feel free to reach out. We’re always happy to help.

Is osteopathy suitable if I’m not sporty?

Absolutely. While we work with many active and sporty clients, a large number of people come to us for everyday aches and pains related to work, posture or daily life. You don’t need to be an athlete to benefit from osteopathy.

Do you only treat sports injuries?

No — while we work with lots of active and sporty clients, we treat all types of injuries and pain, not just sports‑related ones. Many people come to us with everyday aches and pains caused by work, posture, stress or general wear and tear. Osteopathy can be just as effective for desk‑based jobs, family life and day‑to‑day movement as it is for sport.

I’m not very active — can osteopathy still help me?

Absolutely. You don’t need to be sporty or exercise regularly to benefit from osteopathy. We regularly treat people who experience pain from sitting, commuting, working at a desk, lifting children or simply going about daily life. Treatment is always tailored to you and your lifestyle.

Can osteopathy help with work or desk‑related pain?

Yes. Neck pain, back pain, shoulder tension and headaches are very common in people who sit for long periods or work at a desk. Osteopathy can help relieve tension, improve posture and restore movement, as well as give practical advice to help prevent pain from returning.

Do you treat long‑term or recurring pain?

Yes. Many people see us for pain that has been ongoing for months or even years. We take time to understand the underlying cause of recurring issues and create a treatment plan that focuses on improving movement, reducing flare‑ups and helping you manage your condition long‑term.

I’m nervous — what if I don’t like deep or forceful treatment?

That’s completely understandable. Treatment at Helix is always adjusted to your comfort level. We use a range of techniques and will never do anything without explaining it first. If you prefer a gentler approach, just let us know — your comfort and confidence matter.

Is osteopathy suitable if I feel stiff rather than in pain?

Yes. You don’t need to be in acute pain to benefit from osteopathy. Many people come to us because they feel stiff, restricted or “not moving as well as they used to”. Treatment can help improve flexibility, mobility and overall movement quality.

Can osteopathy help with general wellbeing?

Osteopathy isn’t just about pain relief — it can also support overall wellbeing. By improving movement, reducing tension and helping your body function more efficiently, many people find they move more freely, feel less tense and more comfortable in everyday life.

What if I’m not sure what’s causing my pain?

That’s very common — and completely fine. Part of your appointment is spent understanding your symptoms, lifestyle and movement patterns. We’ll assess what’s going on and explain things clearly, so you understand what may be contributing to your pain and how we can help.
